Either defective or not compatible with 2012 Highlander. Unfortunately this item did not work for my vehicle. Either that, or the unit was defective. I ordered a “like new” rack from Amazon Warehouse Deals. It was obviously used upon arrival – scratched on the support bar indicated that bikes had been transported long enough to leave marks. My husband and I spent about 10 minutes attaching it to my 2012 Toyota Highlander. It’s definitely a 2 person job, as you need to maintain tension on multiple straps while supporting the rack itself,…
Worked great! Can’t stand this thing… it leaves/left marks on the trunk of my car where the rubber cushions meet the top of trunk. It also doesn’t do well at high speeds. I’ve had to pull over on the highway doing 55mph to try and hunker it down some more. I would highly suggest not getting this item and looking for one with fasteners that also hook onto the side of trunk lid as these four (2 top, 2 bottom) tend to slide even when they’re SO tight I can’t possibly squeeze any more line out of them…
